Coursework

Coursework models describe assignments, modules, submissions, and supporting content attached to classes. These models attach to the rostering spine through Class. See the Submission Lifecycle guide for how submissions and grades work over time.

coursework overview

Assignment

An Assignment is graded coursework assigned to students in a class. Assignments have due dates, grading settings, and assignee targeting. Each student has one Submission per assignment, and grades live on that submission.

Module

A Module organizes course content into a nested, folder-like structure in the LMS. Assignments, pages, and files can be added to modules, often by setting module_id when creating content.

Submission

A Submission represents the relationship between a Person and an Assignment. Submissions track state, grading, submitted work, and attachments.

Page

A Page is ungraded content shared with students, such as a video or reading. Pages do not expect student submissions or grades.

Announcement

An Announcement lets teachers share information or materials with a class. Announcements are grouped by class rather than by module.

Category

A Category groups assignments in the gradebook. Categories organize assignments visually and may affect grade weighting.

Rubric

A Rubric defines assessment criteria for an assignment using grading_criteria and performance_levels.

File

A File is an uploaded resource attachable to assignments, announcements, pages, or submissions, or uploaded directly to a class or module.

Resource

A Resource links a piece of content to a module. Resources are typically created automatically when content is added to a module via module_id.

External Tool

An External Tool is an LTI attachment type associated with assignments, announcements, or pages.

An External Link is a URL attachment associated with assignments, announcements, pages, or submissions.

Text

A Text is a plain or rich text attachment associated with assignments, announcements, or pages.

Discussion

A Discussion is an attachment type representing a discussion board topic in a learning management system.

Assessment

An Assessment represents an assessment activity associated with coursework in supported integrations.
