Product Licensing Use Cases
Product licensing offers a versatile solution for managing access and control over digital resources in educational environments. Here are a few distinct use cases illustrating its capabilities.
Access to Products by Grade Level or Course Type
In educational setups, product licensing is crucial for delivering the right content to the right students. For example, an online learning platform might offer various courses or modules such as a math curriculum spanning multiple grade levels. Product licensing ensures that students and institutions have access only to the relevant materials for their specific grade or course requirements. It allows educational providers to tag students or classrooms, ensuring they access only the materials they are licensed for.
Assigning Products by Learner Needs
Product licensing can also be used to assign products based on individual learner needs. For instance, a student with special educational requirements (e.g. an english language learner, visually impaired) may need access to specific resources or tools. You can create one or more products that cater to these needs and assign them to the relevant students. In your own platform, you can modify the content or tools available based on the products assigned to each student (e.g. automatically enabling high-contrast mode for visually impaired students).
School Administered Licensing
If your company enables this option, school districts and universities can utilize product licensing to distribute products to their own students and staff, without having to involve your team. This can ultimately save you time and resources, as the school administrators can manage the licensing themselves and your engineering team does not have to build a system or UI to enable this level of control.
Student Self-Pay Models
In some cases, students may be required to pay for their own access to a product. Product licensing can be used to assist these self-pay models, allowing students to purchase access to specific products or features. Once they pay via your website, you can automatically assign the product to them via the Edlink API, granting them access to the content or features they paid for. These licenses can have a specific duration or expiration date and can be adjusted via the Edlink dashboard if needed.
Tagging Users by Region
Some companies produce versions of their curriculum for specific regions (e.g. the State of Texas). Product licensing can be used to quickly associate all Texas-based schools with the Texas version of the curriculum. To do this, create a product
called Texas
and assign it to all users at Texas-based schools. In your own product, you can check for this tag and display the appropriate content.
