What are the Possible Future Services for LTI Advantage?

The LTI Advantage specification from 1EdTech Consortium (1EdTech) is built on the LTI 1.3 specification framework and contains 3 different services:

  • Names and Roles Provisioning Services
  • Assignment and Grades Services
  • Deep Linking

For more information about LTI 1.3 and the LTI Advantage specification, please see our article on this topic.

Besides the current 3 services, LTI Advantage was designed to allow additional services to be implemented in the future. 1EdTech has introduced drafts of several optional services, which might not be public yet and/or require membership to access their documentation. Below are those possible optional services.

Proctoring Service

Providing a way to allow educators to proctor exams has always been challenging for online learning education. Ensuring academic integrity and preventing cheating in a virtual environment requires innovative solutions and technologies. As online learning continues to grow, addressing these challenges becomes increasingly critical to maintaining the credibility and effectiveness of remote education programs. Thus, the Proctoring Service could enable a way to initiate a lunch sequence for proctoring tools and assessment platforms. The Proctoring Service would also support webcam/microphone interactions and screen sharing.

Caliper Analytics Connector

The Caliper Analytics Connector service would allow LTI-compliant apps to report a user's activities during a single session, regardless of the interactions that might have occurred in the app or the LMS. These activities are defined by Caliper profiles and are tracked through the Sensor API. As of May 2024, this service is only for 1EdTech members and is not released to the public.

Course Group Service

Many learning management systems allow for the creation of groups within courses. These groups will contain student enrollments that are subsets of the total enrollments for a given course. The Course Group Service allows LTI-compliant tools to retrieve these groups and enrollments.

Update | This service is publically released.

Submission Review

The Submission Review service will allow for a teacher or student to directly launch into the LTI-compliant tool from the gradebook of the learning management system. This launch can take the user directly to the associated submission in the application for the user to review.

Update | This service is publically released.

Dynamic Registration

To add an LTI-Advantage-compliant tool to an LMS, an administrator or educator typically must fill out several fields in the platform's LTI registration form. This manual process is error-prone and can be confusing to configure if the LTI-compliant app does not provide proper instructions.

The Dynamic Registration service would allow LTI-Advantage-compliant tools to automate registration through one URL. By simplifying the LTI specification registration process, LTI-complaint tools become easier to manage. The Dynamic Registration service is designed to work with LMS providers and apps that support OpenID Connect and OAuth 2.0 registration workflows.

Update | This service is publically released.

Data Privacy Launch

With more data privacy laws coming into force, edtech apps might find it more important to handle their legal requirements. At the forefront of these data privacy laws is the European Union's GDPR.

The Data Privacy Launch service would organize the process of handling GDPR requests in LTI tools. The service would help administrators manage their data privacy requests. As of May 2024, this service is only for 1EdTech members and is not released to the public.
