The partnership began at ASU+GSV, where Donald Johnson, Schola’s Chief Delivery & Experience Officer, stopped by the Edlink booth. Donald was comparing integration solutions and evaluating options like Ednition. What stood out: Edlink’s ability to support both rostering and deeper data fields not typically retrieved from the SIS, which were two essentials for Schola’s next phase of work.

In conversations after the conference, Schola shared a critical challenge: their “black box” problem. After helping a student enroll in a school, the Schola team had no easy way to verify if that student attended or stayed without getting manual confirmation from the school leader. Without access to enrollment and attendance data from the school’s SIS, it was difficult to measure Schola’s long-term impact for their partner schools.

Schola’s mission is deeply rooted in connecting families with the “right-fit” school. Therefore, it was important for their team to look at the students they helped enroll and see that they were prepared, excited to attend, and likely to stay – and have clear data to back that up. The Schola team had a vision to provide rich analytics for schools based on their retention data, which would improve student and parent experiences. However, to make that vision a reality required data, and to build those integrations from scratch would cost considerable time and engineering bandwidth.

Schola also spent a notable amount of time manually verifying data across third-party systems, an inefficient and unsustainable approach as the company scales.
